Expo in extreme heat

Milan swelters in summer, so Taiyo Europe needed to find a creative way to shade the flagship building at Italy’s Expo 2015 – and keep more than 20 million visitors cool.

Shading the world

Aware that we work fast, Taiyo chose us to shade the world’s fair walkways, spanning 85,000m2. They used our MEHGIES® material to make a two-axis structure, with the fabric appearing to be loosely fitted to the rectangular frame – reminiscent of traditional Roman design.

Taiyo requested a bi-coloured design, so we created a membrane with beige on the underside to provide style and comfort, and white on the exterior to reflect the scorching sun. The material is also strong enough to help the building withstand winter weather.
