To ease traffic congestion, a fourth bore in the subterranean Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg, Germany was planned. In 2002, what was then the world’s biggest tunnel boring machine was used, with a 14.2m radius. Workers needed fresh air, but a standard ventilation system could spark an explosion – so Schauenburg, as a specialist for ventilation systems, was given the task of creating a custom-made solution.
We made our MEHGIES® POLYMAR® M-Tarp material anti-static, to help Schauenburg design a ventilation system that met strict health and safety regulations – and reduced the risk of explosion.
Our close collaboration helped Schauenburg overcome one of the industry’s most difficult challenges – and keep workers safe during the ambitious tunnel expansion project.
