I am now working on a second assignment, this time working across the whole of Bonar Floors Division to introduce best practice in purchasing. It’s a real challenge as all our raw materials prices have been impacted by the recent rise in oil prices. Demand for polymers is increasing and we are effectively competing for supply so the project has looked at building strong supplier relationships. I feel the most valuable quality needed for success in this role is the ability to build long-term relationships. Yes, you need to know to have professional purchasing skills, but for many cultures – particularly in the Far East – it’s still important to do business face to face, not just across the internet.
