Yarns

Business background

Our yarns business specialises in the manufacturing of carpet backing yarns for the woven carpet industry and artificial grass yarns for the sports surface and landscape industries worldwide.

Bonar has established itself as a world force in artificial grass yarns. The enhanced product range ensures Monofilament, Hybrid and Fibrillated yarns are available to meet the specific needs of the end user. Our strong focus with producing only the best quality yarns means we can provide a yarn suitable for a specific purpose - be it soccer or hockey, tennis or landscape.
Bonar Technical Yarns has production sites in Scotland, Belgium and China. We are currently building a new manufacturing plant in the Abu Dhabi Polymers Park to complement our existing facilities in Europe. Production is expected to start in late 2009.

Our Dundee based business has also more than 30 years experience in the manufacturing and supply of a range of high specification polypropylene yarns for use in woven Axminster and Wilton carpets.

Monofilament Grass yarns
Bonar’s pure monofilament yarns are extruded from a spinneret extrusion system producing a true monofilament. The individual filaments are then wound and twisted together to produce the final yarn, comprising 4, 6 or 8 filaments in a variety of colour combinations. As the filaments are extruded through individual die heads, Bonar can produce yarns in a range of cross sections.

Fibrillated Grass Yarns
Bonar’s range of fibrillated yarns have some of the best experience on the market. Molten film is slit, precisely drawn and then fibrillated to give the characteristic honeycomb effect inherent to the yarn. This fibrillation ensures the rubber and sand infill is more likely to stay in situ, adding stability and comfort to the synthetic turf and ensuring optimal tuft lock.

BonaFFusion yarn is a hybrid version of monofilament and fibrillated yarn. Manufactured in a similar way to fibrillated yarns, extruded film is precisely cut with exact fibrillation patterns to produce a finely fibrillated yarn which, when tufted, takes on the appearance of a monofilament yarn.

BonaFFusion combines the aesthetic and durable qualities of a monofilament yarn with the infill encapsulation, superior tuft bind and economics of a fibrillated yarn – the best of both worlds!

Coolgrass®
The technology behind Bonar’s Coolgrass® reflects infrared and dissipates heat into the atmosphere instead of absorbing it into the yarn. Existing technologies simply absorb the heat which can result in uncomfortable surface temperatures – especially when using a traditional rubber infill. However, Bonar’s Coolgrass® gives an overall cooler synthetic turf surface.

Carpet Backing Yarns
Bonar Yarns has been manufacturing an outstanding range of polypropylene backing yarns for Axminster and Wilton woven carpets since 1970. Bonar's polypropylene yarns have a higher tenacity than conventional spun yarns made from natural fibres or polyester thus reducing stoppages due to warp and weft breaks. This commitment to quality and an extended range of products has made Bonar Yarns the market leader worldwide.
